Question #293

Can a bin know what was put in it?

About

Building technology that leaves the world better than we found it.

Quinn Labs is an invention laboratory. We don't try to predict the future. We explore questions that could shape it.

Our work combines science, engineering, design and software to build practical experiments around difficult real-world problems. Some become products. Some remain research. Every experiment teaches us something.

Quinn Labs exists to explore difficult problems whose solutions could genuinely improve life.

Quinn Labs is not a software company. It is an invention laboratory. We explore ambitious questions across software, engineering, materials, transport, food, water, biology and design.

We don't chase technology for its own sake. We choose difficult problems where better ideas can improve everyday life.

Our measure of success isn't just revenue. It's whether the products we build help people, communities and the planet.

Not every experiment succeeds. Some become companies. Some become open research. Some inspire others.

We don't build everything we imagine. We rigorously test the few ideas that could genuinely improve the world.

AI is one tool on the bench, not the point of the lab. A project might be software, a sensor rig, a material, a mechanism or simply better design — the question decides, not the trend.

We work in industries that move physical things, where the software has to survive a depot, a bench or a kerbside. We also build for clubs, communities and publishers where clarity and speed matter. That range decides most of our design choices.

We don't sell transformation programmes. We build the smallest working version of the thing, put it in front of the people who'd use it, and let it earn the next step.

Our principles

  • Solve real problems.

The problem comes first. The method — software, mechanics, biology, materials or better design — is chosen after.

  • Build things that last.

Products that still make sense in ten years, not ones that survive a funding round.

  • Put people before hype.

A driver, a grower or a technician has usually seen the problem for longer than we have. Their judgement outranks the trend.

  • Share knowledge where it creates value.

Methods, measurements and failures are more useful published than hoarded.

  • Work with evidence.

Measured in real conditions. If a claim can't be checked, it isn't a result.

  • Build responsibly.

We think about the second-order effects before the launch, not after it.

  • Leave every project better than we found it.

Including the ones we hand over, stop, or give away.

The Quinn Labs test

Every project answers four questions. If the answer is no, we don't build it.

  1. 01

Does it solve a genuine problem?

  2. 02

Will people still care about it in 10 years?

  3. 03

Could it improve lives at scale?

  4. 04

Are we proud to build it?

Our pledge

If one of our projects creates significant value, we want that success to create opportunities for other people — through jobs, partnerships, education or open research.

Our Promise

We don't claim to have the answers.

We promise to ask questions worth exploring, test ideas honestly, publish what we learn, and build practical prototypes where we believe they can make a meaningful difference.

What we say no to

  • Projects where nobody can name the number that should move.
  • Pilots designed so they cannot fail.
  • Work that ends at a recommendation.
  • Tooling for a process nobody has watched being done.
